WORTH is excited to kick off our new 'Summer Spotlight' series to showcase some of the awesome things our members are doing this summer! Our first Spotlight is Isabel Murray!

"Hello! My name is Isabel Murray. I’m a rising sophomore majoring in Public Health and on the pre-med track.

To kick off my summer I spent 3 weeks abroad in Barcelona, Spain living with a host family and taking a class through the University of Michigan. The class was called “Sports and Society” and I learned a lot about Spanish history and the Catalan independence movement through the lens of Spanish sports culture. I had a great time tasting tapas and getting to practice my Spanish with my host mama Rosa!

After a quick stop home, I returned to Ann Arbor for a medical internship. I am interning in the Otolaryngology Department (head and neck surgery) at Michigan Medicine. Most days I work as a research assistant in a laboratory. We are studying different pathways in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and trying to improve the outcome of treatments based on the genetic makeup of a given patient. A couple days a week I shadow in clinic and in the OR. I am also working as a tour guide for the admissions office on weekends! In my free time I’ve discovered many gems in Ann Arbor (notably Fuller Park and tubing down the river!!).

My internship this summer has made me even more excited to be a part of WORTH during the next year because I have built a connection between campus and the hospital. Although I don’t have any specific project ideas yet, I want to become a more active member in WORTH by bringing our open dialogue and warm energy to the Ann Arbor community, including the medical community. All the girls in the club are great people and great role models. I’m excited to learn more about what it means to be a woman with them, and hopefully bring that perspective into the community. I also hope to recruit many new members - especially freshmen looking for a home on campus."
